What is a calorie deficit?

A calorie deficit occurs when you consume fewer calories than your body burns in a day. Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the number of calories your body needs to maintain its current weight. When you consistently eat below that number, your body taps into stored fat for energy — resulting in weight loss. A deficit of 3,500 calories produces approximately 1 lb of fat loss.

How to use your calorie target

Your calculated daily calorie target is a personalized estimate. To use it effectively: track your food intake using a food diary or app; prioritize protein (aim for 0.7–1g per lb of body weight) to preserve muscle; eat whole, nutrient-dense foods to feel full on fewer calories; and re-calculate every 10–15 lbs lost as your TDEE will decrease with weight. If diet alone isn't producing results, prescription GLP-1 treatments can significantly reduce appetite and support a larger natural deficit.

Frequently asked questions

A daily deficit of 300–750 calories is generally considered safe and sustainable for most adults. This produces 0.5–1.5 lbs of weight loss per week. Going below your BMR (the minimum calories your body needs to function) is not recommended without medical supervision, as it can cause muscle loss and metabolic slowdown.

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation, the most clinically validated formula for estimating metabolic rate in adults. Results are estimates — individual factors like sleep, stress, hormones, and gut health can all influence actual calorie burn. Use this as a strong starting point, then adjust based on your real-world results over 2–4 weeks.

Common reasons include underestimating food intake, overestimating activity level, hormonal factors (like insulin resistance or thyroid issues), water retention masking fat loss, or eating back too many exercise calories. If you've been in an accurate deficit for 4+ weeks without results, consulting a licensed provider is recommended. GLP-1 medications like Semaglutide address the hormonal side of weight loss that pure calorie counting cannot.

Yes. GLP-1 receptor agonists like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide work by regulating hunger hormones, making it much easier to maintain a calorie deficit. In clinical trials, participants lost 15–22% of body weight over 68 weeks when combined with lifestyle modifications — significantly more than diet alone. These are prescription medications available through licensed providers in our RX Store.

As your weight decreases, your TDEE also decreases — meaning your original calorie target becomes less of a deficit over time. Recalculate your target every 10–15 lbs of weight lost. This is sometimes called a "plateau adjustment" and is a normal part of the weight loss process.
